January 5, 2023

The Wise County Bee Meeting started at 6:03 pm. January 5th, 2023.

There were 17 people in attendance. Including two possible new members.

A few questions were asked, such as:

Q. What seeds can I plant for the bees?

A. I recommend Cilantro or Hairy Vetch.

Q. What type of pollen might they be bringing in in the winter? I see them with white pollen pants on.

A. Could be mistletoe or rosemary.

(Later a question was asked; why are the bees eating my chicken feed? The answer was for protein. A statement was also added that that could be the “white pollen” they were seeing.)

Some advice was given to a new member:

. Wear a well-ventilated suit.

. work your hives between 10 and 2 o’clock.

. wear closed-toed shoes and use a smoker.

Hive sizes were discussed. Hive distance from home was discussed. Hive distance from ground was discussed. (It should be 14-16 inches from ground.)

Traumatic bee experiences were shared.

Some reading material resources were suggested. Some YouTube beekeeper channels were offered to watch. Such as: Bob Benie, Barnyard Bees, and Kamon Reynolds.

Tips were given about storing and housing materials.

The scholarship was discussed.

And a few final questions were asked:

Q. Can I put bees wax on my frames?

A. Yes. It can also help to give them a base layer so they may start building it out.

Q. What should we be doing with our hives right now?

A. Preparing for spring honey/ or opening them up again after winter.
